A 16-year-old girl jumped to her death from the fifth floor of the Danbury Fair Mall parking garage Saturday afternoon.
The teen, identified as Danbury High School student Hailey Nailor, had reportedly contemplated her decision to jump or not while on Snapchat. She, unfortunately, decided to jump.
"It's really a tragedy," said Danbury Police Det. Lt. Mark Williams. "We are investigating, but it appears to be a suicide."
According to News-Times, the teen had been committed to the Danbury Hospital psychiatric unit just 24 hours before, said her father Kevin Nailor.
The Department of Children and Families had reportedly been involved, reported NewsTimes.
Following her death, social media was abuzz with the news, and apparently, one user decided to post "inappropriate information," regarding the teen online, said Danbury School District Superintendent of Schools Sal Pascarella.
"It is with great sorrow that I share information on the untimely passing of a Danbury High School student on Saturday, Feb 9, 2019.," he wrote on the district's Facebook page. "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are extended to family and friends at this most difficult time."
In response to her death, Danbury High School will have counselors and support staff on hand for any student in need, Pascarella said.
"In addition, if at any point you feel your child may be having difficulties, please contact their school principal, counselor or social worker for support," he added.
He went on to say that the district was working with authorities to have the "inappropriate comments" removed.
Her friend, Maria Garcia of Putnam Lake, said on Facebook that Hailey never deserved what she went through.
"This beautiful, intelligent, caring, loving girl took her life on Saturday morning of February 9th," she wrote. "She never deserved what she went through or what got her to that point to make that decision. Many many people cared about her and are so devastated by this unbearable tragedy."
Hundreds of people responded to post, offering sympathy for the family, and Hailey, who was reportedly being bullied.
Garcia plans to hold a candlelight vigil to celebrate her friend's life at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the mall. She asked that all wear blue and white, the teen's favorite colors.
"I would like to have had many people attend has possible to remember her and make sure she’s never forgotten," she wrote. 💗 Rest easy Hailey Nailor🙏🏻
Police are asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident to contact Detective Julio Lopez at 203-797-4682.
